What it does
Bring a hiring brief and up to five CVs into a ChatGPT conversation. ChatGPT proposes job-related criteria, you confirm up to eight, and Marxel opens a review workspace with a cited quote and an interview question for each candidate and criterion.
The app doesn't rank candidates, sort them into Screening Buckets, make hiring decisions or contact anyone. Your team reads the evidence and decides what to do next. It also doesn't search your existing Marxel jobs or candidates.
Using ChatGPT on its own for CV screening? See how a chat-only workflow compares with Marxel.
Add it to ChatGPT
Use either of these:
- 1. Once Marxel is listed in ChatGPT's app directory, add it from there.
- 2. If your ChatGPT account has developer mode, turn it on in Settings → Security and login, create a personal plugin from
https://mcp.marxel.co/mcpand install it.
Then mention Marxel in a chat. To try it without real CVs, ask ChatGPT to “open the Marxel sample shortlist”. The sample is a fictional role with three invented candidates and can't be saved to Marxel.
You don't need a Marxel account to compare CVs. Saving a review needs a Marxel account connected through OAuth sign-in.
Review candidates
- 1. Confirm the criteria. ChatGPT proposes job-related criteria from the hiring brief and asks you to confirm up to eight before it reads any CV evidence. This is a form where ChatGPT supports one; otherwise it asks in chat. Must-have is used for explicit requirements, Responsibility for role duties and Nice-to-have for desirable experience.
- 2. Open the review workspace. For each candidate and criterion, the workspace shows whether the CV evidences it, needs clarification or doesn't evidence it, with a cited quote and an interview question to verify it. Marxel's server rejects any quote that doesn't appear word for word in the CV text you supplied.
- 3. Work with the evidence. Compare selected candidates side by side, prepare interview questions, and correct an assessment in the candidate panel if you read the evidence differently. Discuss selected sends the selected candidates' evidence back into the ChatGPT conversation.
- 4. Export a brief. Download the review as PDF, Word or Markdown. The file is handed to ChatGPT to download and isn't stored by Marxel.
A quote check confirms the words appear in the supplied text; it doesn't confirm that the CV is genuine or that ChatGPT's reading of it is right. Corrections you make in the workspace last until you reload it.
Save to Marxel
When you want to keep a review, choose Save to Marxel in the workspace. ChatGPT asks you to connect your Marxel account the first time. You then choose an organisation and confirm the import.
Marxel creates a Screening Job with your confirmed criteria, adds only the candidates you selected, and starts screening them. The workspace shows progress and then links to the results, so you don't repeat the job setup in Marxel.
If the workspace opens a Marxel web page instead of saving in place, your connection is using the earlier import link. Sign in, choose or create an organisation, and confirm the import there. The link lasts an hour.
Tools
The app exposes seven tools. Only save_to_marxel writes data.
| Tool | Access | What it does |
|---|---|---|
open_shortlist | Read-onlyNo sign-in | Opens the review workspace with the labelled fictional sample: its hiring brief, criteria, and each sample candidate's status, source and interview question per criterion. |
compare_candidates | Read-onlyNo sign-in | Compares candidates from the fictional sample against its hiring brief. It does not compare your CVs. |
confirm_criteria | Read-onlyNo sign-in | Asks you to confirm job-related criteria before any evidence is extracted. Proposes criteria from the hiring brief; you keep up to eight. Uses a form where ChatGPT supports one, otherwise asks in chat. |
create_review_workspace | Read-onlyNo sign-in | Builds a candidate comparison and interview questions from CVs you supply, using only the confirmed criteria. Every quote must appear word for word in the supplied CV text. Stores nothing and changes no Marxel records. |
list_marxel_organizations | Read-onlySign-in required | Lists the Marxel organisations your account can save a review to. |
save_to_marxel | WriteSign-in required | After you choose an organisation and confirm the import, creates a Screening Job and the selected Candidate records, then starts screening. Retries with the same request key return the same Screening Job. It never messages candidates or makes hiring decisions. |
get_marxel_save_status | Read-onlySign-in required | Checks a previous save. Returns links to the saved Screening Job, team settings and plan page, the number of candidates imported, and plan details when available. |
Sign-in and permissions
The four review tools work without an account. The three save tools use OAuth, with Marxel as the authorisation server. To connect, you sign in to Marxel and approve the request on Marxel's consent page.
The app requests two scopes:
reviews:writelets it list your organisations and save confirmed reviews into an organisation you choose. It doesn't give access to your existing Screening Jobs or Candidates.offline_accesskeeps the connection working while you remain signed in to Marxel. Access tokens themselves expire after five minutes.
The save tool only accepts requests you have confirmed, and Marxel checks that you are still a member of the chosen organisation. On every request, Marxel verifies the token's signature, issuer, audience, scope and expiry, and rechecks that your Marxel session is still active and your consent is still in place.
The workspace links to plan and team pages in the Marxel web app. The app doesn't take payments or send invitations inside ChatGPT.
Data handling
When you review candidates
ChatGPT sends the hiring brief, confirmed criteria, CV text and the quotes it extracted to Marxel's app server. The server checks each quote against the supplied text and returns the workspace. It doesn't store this content, doesn't create or change any Marxel records and doesn't call an AI provider.
The app server records operational usage for each tool call: the tool name, timing, whether it failed, the client and server versions and an anonymous session ID. CV text, hiring briefs, tool arguments and results are excluded from these records.
When you save a review
Only the candidates you select are imported. Marxel keeps:
- The hiring brief, when supplied, and your confirmed criteria, on a new Screening Job.
- For each selected candidate: their name, current role and company, the CV text ChatGPT supplied, and the source label of the CV.
- The evidence status, quote, source and interview question for each criterion, saved as a candidate note and kept separate from Marxel's own screening results.
Original uploaded files and the ChatGPT conversation are not transferred. The temporary copy of the review used for the import is cleared once the import succeeds. Marxel then screens the imported candidates as it does any other Screening Job, using the AI providers listed on our subprocessors page.
Saved Screening Jobs and Candidates are ordinary Marxel records, handled like any other job in your organisation. For details, see our privacy policy, security overview and data processing agreement. ChatGPT handles conversation data under OpenAI's own terms.
Disconnect
In ChatGPT: remove or disconnect the Marxel app in ChatGPT's settings. ChatGPT then stops calling Marxel's tools.
In Marxel: there's no settings page for revoking connected apps yet. Because every request is checked against the Marxel session you approved it with, signing out of Marxel in that browser stops further saves. Changing your password in Settings → Security also signs out your other sessions. To have the authorisation removed from your account, email support@marxel.co.
Disconnecting doesn't delete reviews you already saved. Delete those Screening Jobs in Marxel like any other job.
Limits and troubleshooting
- Up to five candidates and eight confirmed criteria per workspace. ChatGPT should ask you to choose a batch of five rather than drop candidates.
- Up to 40,000 characters of text per CV and 20,000 characters per hiring brief, and requests of at most 1 MB.
- PDF exports are images of each page. Use Word or Markdown when you need selectable text.
ChatGPT asks you to connect Marxel
Comparing CVs needs no account, but listing organisations, saving and checking save status need a connected Marxel account. Sign in to Marxel and approve access when ChatGPT prompts you. If you cancel, your review stays open and nothing is saved.
The review workspace failed
Each quote must appear word for word in the CV text supplied in that request, and a workspace takes at most five candidates and eight confirmed criteria. Ask ChatGPT to recheck the quotes or split the CVs into batches of five. If a refresh fails, the previous review stays on screen.
The save failed or timed out
Retry with the same save request. Marxel returns the existing Screening Job instead of creating a duplicate. If the review or the selected candidates changed, the save needs a new request.
Marxel says a plan limit was reached
Imported candidates count towards your organisation's monthly CV screening allowance. Check your plan in Marxel, then retry with the same save request.
An import link says it has expired
Import links opened on the Marxel website last an hour. Your review is still in ChatGPT; create a new import link from it.
